What is an Allergist?

An allergist is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies, such as anaphylaxis, asthma, atopic dermatitis (eczema), and hay fever.

Allergist/immunologists have specialized training in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of immune system problems such as allergies, asthma, inherited immunodeficiency diseases, autoimmune diseases, and even AIDS. Allergist/immunologists can reduce the number of days patients need to stay home from work or school because of symptoms. Studies show that people under the care of an allergist/immunologist also make fewer visits to emergency rooms, and are better able to manage their allergies and asthma on a daily basis.

Allergist/immunologists must complete at least nine years of training. After completing medical school, training for three years in internal medicine or pediatrics, and passing the Board exam for their chosen specialty, a physician must focus on the subspecialty of allergy/immunology by completing at least two years of study, known as a fellowship, in an allergy/immunology training program. An allergist/immunologist who is listed as ABAI-certified has successfully passed the certifying exam of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI), after completing their fellowship.

Established in 1942, the College is dedicated to improving the quality of patient care in allergy and immunology through research, advocacy and professional and public education.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. For more than 60 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world.
